JOHN LANCASHIRE | BIO < back to artists

JOHN LANCASHIRE emigrated to Australia with his family from England as a young boy.  He attended art school in Sydney briefly, but is largely a self-taught artist who has developed his own very distinct impressionistic style of painting.

John, also known as 'The Monday Painter' moved to New Zealand over 15 years ago and is the owner / operator of 'Pearl' a popular Napier hair salon.  John currently divides his time between the salon, and his studio.

"I primarily make paintings using oil on canvas.  The imagery in my work stems from my response to things - ideas that I become slightly obsessed with, it could be a particular colour, a shape, or a phrase.  I store them somewhere.  The mechanical act of painting, or making a mark brings them out. At the time I believe I know what I'm painting, but I don't think I ever really do" (John Lancashire)
